1. Market Opportunities and Industry Demands of Global Fried Extruded Snack Industry
In recent years, the global snack food industry maintains steady growth. Consumption scenarios keep expanding, and demands for snacks are driven by household consumption, convenience store retail, supermarket distribution, cross-border e-commerce and other channels. Featuring crispy texture, diverse flavor options, affordable prices and broad consumer groups, fried extruded snacks remain a mainstream category in the snack market. Regional markets show differentiated preferences: Southeast Asian markets favor spicy, seaweed and barbecue flavored extruded crisps; Middle Eastern markets prefer cheese, original and sweet hollow extruded products; manufacturers in Africa and Latin America have strong demand for cost-effective, easy-to-operate and low-maintenance large-scale snack production lines.
Meanwhile, many traditional overseas snack factories still rely on semi-automatic standalone machines, which bring numerous pain points. Heavy labor input leads to inconsistent color, crispness and oil content between batches. Old-fashioned frying equipment suffers from high oil consumption, heavy oil fume, difficult residue cleaning and frequent oil replacement, pushing up production costs. Low integration of equipment disconnects individual processes and limits capacity expansion. Product switching is complicated, making it hard to keep up with fast iteration of new flavors and shapes.
Against this backdrop, integrated automated twin-screw extruded fried production lines have become the top choice for upgrading for many food manufacturers. With nearly two decades of experience in extruding machinery manufacturing, we keep track of real production challenges faced by overseas food plants and continuously optimize twin-screw extrusion technology as well as downstream frying, de-oiling and seasoning equipment. Our modular fried snack line solutions balance stable output, food safety, energy consumption control and easy operation. They are suitable for newly-established small snack factories as well as large food groups building high-standard workshops. Our equipment helps customers stabilize product quality, control production costs and enrich product portfolios so as to build competitive advantages in local snack markets.

2. Introduction to Main Units of the Automated Fried Extruded Snack Production Line
A complete fried extruded snack production line takes the twin-screw extruder as the core host, coordinated with upstream and downstream supporting equipment. All units work together to realize continuous automatic operation from raw material feeding to finished product packaging. Parts in direct contact with food are mainly made of food-grade 304 stainless steel, complying with international food processing hygiene standards for convenient cleaning and disinfection and lower risks of microbial contamination. The whole line consists of these core units:
Raw Material Mixing Unit: including powder mixer, minor ingredient feeder and screw conveyor. It can process corn flour, rice flour, wheat flour, oat flour, sorghum flour and various grain powders. Powder and liquid additives can be added synchronously to mix raw materials according to formulas and adjust moisture evenly, ensuring consistent raw material conditions for every batch and reducing color and texture differences of final products from the source.
Extrusion and Forming Unit: the core is the twin-screw extruder equipped with frequency conversion control system, die sets and rotary cutting mechanism. Under shearing, conveying and friction of screws, materials are fully gelatinized and cooked under high temperature and pressure inside the closed cavity. Cooked materials are extruded through customized dies and cut into specified length and thickness by rotary cutters. Dozens of shapes such as triangular pieces, hollow tubes, round chips, five-pointed stars and letter shapes can be produced by simple replacement of dies.
Pre-drying Unit: multi-layer continuous dryer with circulating hot air and independently adjustable temperature zones. Freshly cut extruded semi-finished products contain high moisture. Low-temperature uniform drying stabilizes the structure of blanks, which is an essential pre-process before frying.
Frying Unit: continuous fryer with optional atmospheric frying or vacuum frying configuration. It is equipped with constant temperature control system, automatic residue filtration system and oil-water separation structure to continuously filter frying debris, slow down oil oxidation and deterioration, extend oil service life and cut oil cost.
De-oiling Unit: centrifugal de-oiler. Fried snacks are fed into the unit to remove free surface oil by centrifugal force. It effectively reduces oil content of finished snacks while maintaining crispy texture and extending shelf life.
Seasoning System: octagonal seasoning drum supporting dry powder seasoning and liquid spraying, which can be used separately or combined. The rotating speed is adjustable for even coating of seasoning powder or sauce, minimizing powder waste and dust during seasoning.
Cooling Conveying and Detection Unit: air cooling conveyor and metal detector. Hot seasoned snacks are cooled by air to avoid moisture regaining and softening after packaging. Metal detectors inspect materials in real time and reject products mixed with metal impurities to guarantee food safety for end consumers.
Finished Product Packaging Unit: matched vertical automatic packaging machine, which automatically completes weighing, bag forming, sealing and date printing. Various bag styles are available for retail small bags and bulk big bags.
The whole line adopts modular design. Customers can select units flexibly according to budget, workshop space and product positioning. Full set of equipment is not required at the initial stage, and extra modules can be added later for capacity expansion when orders grow.

3. Standardized Complete Production Process of Fried Extruded Snacks
The automated line connects complex snack-making procedures for stable and controllable production, delivering far better batch consistency than manual work or standalone machines. The standard process is as follows:
Step 1: Raw material proportioning and mixing. Main raw materials such as corn flour or rice flour are fed into the mixer together with measured clean water and improvers according to formulas. Paddles inside keep stirring to fully blend powder and water to reach the required moisture content. After mixing, the screw conveyor automatically transfers materials to the hopper of extruder, avoiding secondary contamination and labor work caused by manual handling.
Step 2: Extrusion cooking and cutting. Materials enter the cavity of twin-screw extruder. High-speed rotating screws shear materials and raise temperature and pressure inside the cavity to fully gelatinize starch. Driven by pressure, cooked materials are extruded continuously through customized die holes. The rotary cutter at the head cuts blanks into fixed shapes and sizes.
Step 3: Hot air pre-drying. Fresh extruded blanks with high moisture will cause severe oil splashing, excessive oil absorption and uneven expansion if fried directly. Semi-finished products are sent to the multi-layer dryer for zoned hot air dewatering to remove redundant moisture slowly. Stable blank structure ensures uniform heating during frying, lower oil absorption and better crispness of final products.
Step 4: Continuous frying and shaping. Dried blanks are conveyed evenly into the oil tank of fryer. Oil temperature and frying time are set precisely based on product types. Materials move forward in oil and are heated comprehensively for further expansion and shaping to form crispy texture. The built-in circulating oil filtration system continuously separates frying residues to prevent burnt scraps from darkening oil and bringing bitter taste to snacks.
Step 5: Centrifugal de-oiling. Fried snacks are transported to the de-oiler, where centrifugal force removes free oil attached on the surface. This procedure directly determines oil content index and is critical for manufacturing healthy extruded snacks. De-oiling parameters can be adjusted to meet customers’ product standards.
Step 6: Automatic seasoning. De-oiled snacks enter the seasoning drum. Seasoning powder or sauce can be sprayed automatically according to flavor recipes. The drum rotates slowly to coat every snack evenly. Barbecue, spicy, cheese, tomato, seaweed, sweet and many other flavors are available.
Step 7: Air cooling. Seasoned snacks stay at high temperature. Direct sealing will lead to condensed moisture and softening inside bags. Materials go through the air cooling section and cool down to room temperature to stabilize texture.
Step 8: Metal detection and automatic packaging. Cooled snacks pass through the metal detector to reject defective pieces with metal contaminants. Qualified products are conveyed to packaging machines for automatic quantitative filling, sealing and production date printing, turning out finished fried extruded snacks ready for market distribution.
